Sylvia’s Story

June 14th, 2009

Video production by Indigo Productions

Sylvia used to be homeless and has slept on park benches. Living in her own studio apartment at our Marcy/Hart residence, she does not have the extra stress of figuring out where she is going to sleep. Sylvia has been able to focus on her sobriety and her other health issues.

    Hello,
My name is Derrick Richard and anyone that understands the dynamics of homelessness, substance abuse and perseverance should be cheering for Sylvia. now that Sylvia has been stabilized with housing everything else seemingly has fallen in place. However, the fight has just begun because Sylvia like all of us who have been through the battle with substance abuse and homelessness we must live it day by day….by the grace  of God the process of mending another broken vessel has begun….Hooray for Sylvia and Cudoes for SUS for what they have accomplish since their inception in 1978…God bless and continue to save and change lives and conditions in society for the less seen.

She’s so brave to have come through this and refuse to lose her mind.  It’s such an indescribably, all-encompassing hardship to be homeless; even the process of going homeless is massive work (seeing to the details and logistics of dividing and transporting all your stuff to people who need it, worthy organizations, etc., while dealing with your own situation).  Women often have to arrange for their children to live with relatives, or make other arrangements, for their own protection.  But many more people are homeless today, thanks to the GOP and banks.  Appreciation of all this will increase.

Thanks Sylvia, for sharing about this experience in an intimate, matter-of-fact way.  And thanks SUS, for helping Sylvia, and for all the other good people you help extricate from the pit of dire circumstance.
