State gets $25M from feds to fight opioid crisis

New York is beefing up programs to fight the opioid crisis with $25.2 million in new federal funding.
Programs in 35 counties will be supported by the Opioid State Targeted Response grant administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office announced Thursday. Some programs will focus on mobile treatment and peer services.
“Engagement is a challenge,” said Donna Colonna, CEO of Services for the UnderServed, one of the organizations in New York City to receive funding.
The organization plans to use its more than $1.2 million in funding for a peer-support program that meets people where there are, Colonna said.
Aside from Services for the UnderServed, recipients in the city include VIP Community Services, $197,548; New York Therapeutic Communities, $1,345,255; Elmcor, $1 million; Resource Counseling Center, $500,000; and Community Health Action of Staten Island, $250,000.
