September is Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide is a major public health concern. More than 45,900 people die by suicide each year in the United States; it is the 12th leading cause of death overall. Suicide is complicated and tragic, but it is often preventable.
We can all help prevent suicide. Every year, mental health organizations and individuals across the country raise awareness of suicide prevention during September, National Suicide Prevention Month. And September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides.
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, including prevention and crisis resources for you, your loved ones and the people you support, plus best practices for professionals. Additional resources are listed below.

- #BeThe1To is the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s campaign to spread the word about actions we can all take to prevent suicide. These actions can promote healing, help and give hope.
- Call 1-888-NYC-WELL, text “WELL” to 65173, or click HERE to chat with a professional. This 24/7 service is free of charge and completely confidential.
- Call the NAMI-NYC Helpline at 212-684-3264 or email [email protected]. Services are available in English and Spanish, Monday-Friday 10am to 6pm. NAMI also offers support groups and classes.
