Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide Prevention Month

Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background. In 2021, suicide was the eleventh leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of more than 48,100 people.

We can all help prevent suicide. Every year, mental health advocates, public health organizations, survivors, allies, and community members raise awareness of suicide prevention during September, National Suicide Prevention Month. And today, September 10, is World Suicide Prevention Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, including prevention and crisis resources for you, your loved ones and the people you support, plus best practices for professionals. Additional resources are listed below.

We continue to organize SafeTALK trainings which provide staff with the skills to recognize the cues, save a life, and help reduce personal and community stigma attached to suicide and thoughts of suicide.
