S:US is New York City’s Leading Organization Working to Help Adults with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities Live, Work, And Participate in their Community

Queens, NY — Services for the UnderServed (S:US) hosted its annual Developmental Disabilities Championships and Family Fun Day on Thursday at Astoria Park in Queens. The once-a-year event celebrates the people with intellectual/de velopmental disabilities (I/DD) that S:US serves across New York City.

“The Developmental Disabilities Championships and Family Fun Day is one of my favorite events that Services for the UnderServed hosts throughout the year,” said Perry Perlmutter, CEO of S:US. “Being able to gather the people and families we serve to celebrate their individuality and show that with the right support system, everyone can live a meaningful and fulfilling life within their community.”

Services for the UnderServed supports approximately 700 people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD), as well as neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Services are tailored to each person’s needs and are offered in integrated settings at residences and day programs. The organization is guided by the belief that, with the right set of supports, people with I/DD can live, work, and participate in their community, deepen relationships with friends, family and others, direct their own lives, and experience life to their fullest potential.

“I am incredibly proud to be celebrating the amazing people we serve alongside their families and the staff that support them on a day of friendly competition,” said Monica Santos, Chief Program Officer at S:US. “Days like today are a joyful celebration of the work that they each put in year-round to build individual practical skills and deepen their social connections. At Services for the UnderServed, we truly believe that everybody can reach their full potential with the right support system.”

Thursday’s event began with an opening ceremony and Olympic-style parade. Participants also competed in a variety of track races and field competitions. All competitors received medals, and trophies were awarded to first-place finishers. Arts and crafts and other activities followed, including a basketball tournament.
