On October 10th, we hosted our annual Developmental Disabilities Championships and Family Fun Day at Astoria Park in Queens. This highly anticipated event brought together people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD), their families, and S:US staff for a day of friendly competition, creativity, and community bonding. “The Developmental Disabilities Championships and Family Fun Day is a time to celebrate who we are and how special everybody is,” said Monica Santos, Chief Program Officer, welcoming everyone to the celebration.

This event is a reflection of our mission to support people with I/DD, as well as neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Through tailored services at our residences and day programs, we empower each person to lead fulfilling, independent lives. We are guided by the belief that people with I/DD can thrive in their communities, build meaningful relationships, and reach their full potential with the right support.
The chilly morning was kicked off by our amazing Emcee Ashley Blaise, VP of DD Residential Services. She set the tone with her infectious energy and enthusiasm for the fun-filled day! Participants and families beamed with excitement as the celebration began with an Olympics-style procession. The parade was followed by a banner competition that showcased the creativity and spirit of each group. The judges, Monica Santos and Bradley Alperin, Chief Compliance Officer, faced a tough decision to select the winners from the impressive array of entries.
Ultimately the trophies were awarded to:
- South Bronx Day Hab for “Most Creative”
- 1109 Bushwick Group Home for “Most Inclusive”
- 34th Street Group Home for “Best Design”

The banner competition was a testament to the participants’ enthusiasm and creativity, but the fun did not stop there. For the activities ahead, Lori Lerner, DD Coordinator of Family & Wellness Services, led a brief stretching exercise to warm up the participants. The day continued with a series of track races, field events, arts and crafts, and a lively dance party featuring a DJ that kept the crowd moving.

Throughout the day, participants shared their excitement and joy, reflecting on their favorite moments and expressing gratitude for the event.
Shaida from Graff, graciously voiced, “I had so much fun with my friends. My favorite was the Tic-Tac-Toe game! Thanks [S:US] for putting this together.”
“I missed having the basketball game, but it was fun racing. I won a medal!” Jason from Valentine Avenue proudly remarked.
Valerie from 5th Ave smiled as she shared, “I really enjoy being here with everybody. It was fun playing the games and dancing.”
“I really liked the DJ and music. It made me happy,” exclaimed Santiago from Valentine 2.
We are thankful to our dedicated staff and volunteers who organized the event, ensuring everything ran smoothly. Special recognition goes to our DD program staff and direct support professionals who work year-round to provide exceptional care and create an environment where the people we serve can grow and thrive.

As the day ended, participants left with cherished memories and a sense of accomplishment and belonging, knowing their potential is limitless with the right support system in place.
