Brooklyn, NY – Earlier today, Services for the UnderServed (S:US) celebrated an extraordinary milestone: the 100th birthday of Doris Foster, a beloved S:US resident and lifelong New Yorker who has thrived in their community homes for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD).

Surrounded by fellow residents, friends, staff, and supporters, Doris marked a century defined by resilience, joy, and community. The celebration honored not only her remarkable life, but also the critical role housing, community, and supportive services play in helping New Yorkers with I/DD live long, fulfilling lives.

A woman of vibrant personality and timeless style, Doris enjoys getting her hair and nails done, shopping, watching soap operas, and eating pancakes. Her favorite colors — red, pink, and leopard print — were reflected throughout the festivities, capturing the bold spirit that has carried her through 100 remarkable years.

The celebration also spotlighted the broader importance of stable housing and supportive programming in ensuring people with I/DD can age with dignity. Through residential services, wellness and clinical support, community-building activities, and daily living support, S:US helps residents remain safely housed and meaningfully connected throughout their lives.

“Celebrating Doris’ 100th birthday was an honor,” said Perry Perlmutter, President and CEO of Services for the UnderServed. “Her life shows that with stable housing and the right supports, New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities can thrive at every stage. We remain committed to helping our residents age with dignity and connection.”

Guests had the opportunity to speak with Doris, fellow community members, and S:US leadership about the transformative role stable housing, community and holistic services play in helping vulnerable New Yorkers stay housed and live fulfilling lives.
