HOPE Count at a Glance

The Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) Count is New York City’s annual, overnight count of individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness. This year’s count took place from Tuesday, March 10 at 10 PM to Wednesday, March 11 at 4 AM, mobilizing volunteers across all five boroughs.

Why It’s Essential

HOPE provides a point‑in‑time snapshot of the number of people living unsheltered in public spaces. This data is vital: it guides how the city and service providers, including Services for the UnderServed, direct outreach, housing, and support resources.

Our Staff Stepped Up

Alongside more than 1,400 volunteers, Services for the UnderServed staff played a powerful role in this year’s HOPE Count. Team members from programs across the organization spent the night canvassing streets, subways, and public spaces.

Their participation reflects the heart of S:US:

  • Showing up when it matters most
  • Meeting people where they are
  • Turning compassion into action

Their presence ensured that every person encountered was acknowledged with dignity.

Why It Matters

At Services for the UnderServed, we use insights from HOPE to:

  • Enhance outreach efforts to people living on the streets and in public spaces
  • Connect individuals to housing and support, including behavioral health services, medical care, and case management
  • Advocate for smarter policies and investments that prioritize permanent, stable housing

HOPE is more than a count—it is a commitment. Each number represents a person with a story, and each year’s findings push us to deepen our resolve to ensure that no one has to live without a safe place to call home.
