Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) provides housing stabilization, case management, and other critical support to veterans and their families facing housing insecurity

NEW YORK – Services for the UnderServed (S:US), one of New York’s largest providers of services for veterans, is expanding its Supportive Services for Veteran Families program to Westchester County, bringing urgent housing assistance and homelessness prevention services to veterans and their families who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their homes.

Services for the UnderServed currently provides SSVF services to veterans and their families across New York City and Long Island, helping low-income veteran households achieve and maintain housing stability through a range of individualized services and supports. Beginning October 1, Services for the UnderServed began expanding the program to Westchester County.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “Those who have served our country deserve our support when they need it most, and no Westchester veteran should have to face homelessness or the threat of losing their home. Through our expanded partnership with Services for the UnderServed, Westchester County is helping veterans access the housing assistance and resources they need to remain safely and stably housed. We are proud to stand with our veterans and ensure they know their community is here for them.”

Westchester County Veterans Service Agency Director Josh Gaccione said: “Housing insecurity touches every corner of our community. Ensuring that no veteran or military family ever faces homelessness or the risk of it is one of our most important obligations. We wholeheartedly support Services for the UnderServed expanding their SSVF program to Westchester and look forward to strengthening our partnership to keep our veterans housed and supported.”

The program, funded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program, serves low-income veterans at or below 80% of the Area Median Income who are experiencing homelessness or are at imminent risk of homelessness. Veteran status and other eligibility requirements apply in accordance with national SSVF program guidelines.

Through SSVF, Services for the UnderServed works with veterans to help them quickly secure permanent housing and provides homelessness prevention assistance to eligible veterans and families. These services include case management, outreach, housing counseling, income and benefits services, housing search and placement assistance, and multiple other supports that empower program participants to meet their housing stability goals.

“Across Westchester, we’re working directly with the VA Medical Centers and local providers to make sure veterans and their families can connect with support as quickly and easily as possible,” said Adam Wawrynek, VP of Eviction Prevention & Veterans Services at Services for the UnderServed. “Our team will coordinate outreach and referrals locally, and we can provide services in person or remotely depending on what works best for each veteran. We want veterans across the county to have a clear, straightforward path to the housing support they need.”

“Every veteran and their family deserves the stability of a safe place to call home,” said Perry Perlmutter, President and CEO of Services for the UnderServed. “Expanding our work into Westchester means we can reach more veterans before housing instability becomes a crisis and help those already without a home find a path back to stability.”

The Westchester expansion will build on Services for the UnderServed’s longstanding work supporting veterans as they navigate the transition to civilian life. Services for the UnderServed currently serves approximately 2,000 veterans and their families, including individuals experiencing chronic homelessness, unemployment, untreated post-traumatic stress disorder, and disconnection from family and other support networks.
