Antonio first connected with Services for the UnderServed (S:US) after his caseworker at a shelter referred him to our affordable and supportive housing site in the Bronx, a turning point that opened the door to stability and new opportunity.
“S:US provided me with stability and gave me the opportunity to participate in urban farming. It has truly transformed my life.”
Through S:US Urban Farms®, Antonio found meaningful work caring for plants and helping provide fresh produce to the community. His responsibilities change with the seasons and include watering, trimming, supporting, and harvesting crops to keep the farm thriving.
One of the aspects he enjoys most is connecting with visitors and seeing their appreciation for the farm.
“I enjoy taking care of the plants and interacting with the community when they visit the farm. It’s a rewarding experience to see people appreciate the plants.”
For Antonio, urban farming offers more than hands-on work. It has become an important part of his personal growth and well-being.
“Being an urban farmer helps me regulate my emotions, gives me purpose, and makes me happy. It’s a fulfilling experience that has brought a sense of balance to my life.”
As he looks toward the future, Antonio shared, “I hope to continue growing within the Urban Farms program and become a better person. I want to keep striving to improve myself and contribute more to the community.”
Reflecting on his journey, Antonio expressed, “S:US has been a huge part of my journey. The support I’ve received has given me not just stability, but also a sense of belonging. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities they’ve provided.”
Today, Antonio is focused on what lies ahead, using the stability he found to continue growing, giving back, and pursuing new opportunities.
“It’s been a life-changing experience for me, and I believe it could be for others too.”
