Theresa’s Unforgettable 70th Birthday Bash

On a recent cold winter day, person supported Theresa celebrated her 70th birthday in a big way throughout the day at her S:US home in Brooklyn. This was no ordinary birthday party but one which was festive and formal, filled with things that she loves – music, good company, good food, cake and ice cream! As her birthday approached, people who support her including family from out of state and S:US staff asked her how she would like to celebrate her birthday. She exclaimed, “I want a party and cake!”
Both family and staff collaborated closely to make her day special. Staff brought in a catered meal of some of her favorite foods including fish, chicken, rice and peas, salad, veggies, a variety of drinks, along with cake filled with strawberry filling and vanilla ice cream with strawberries and cherries. A diverse array of music was played throughout the day because Theresa loves to dance, shake her arms, and do lots of body movement. Staff helped decorate for her dinner party by creating a wall of white paper flowers, displaying colorful balloons and centerpieces with white and pink flowers, and dressing the dinner table with special napkins, tablecloth, gold plates, gold silverware, fancy cups, and straws. Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) played the role of Glam Squad – they worked on women housemates’ hair and makeup, bought them jewelry and hosiery, and helped everyone get dressed in their finest attire.
DSP Stephen played live music during the festivities including Theresa’s preferred songs “Old McDonald,” “Jingle Bells,” and “This Is The Way We Wash Our Hands,” which turned into a spirited sing-along! Her family connected with Theresa and her housemates during the party through Zoom so that they could share in the celebration.
Theresa was the belle of the ball and was beaming throughout the day! We’re grateful to S:US staff for showering Theresa with so much love on her special day.
