My reflections on Black History Month
On the final day of February, I wanted to showcase the amazing staff profiles we featured this past month and the pooled talent, passion and vibrancy of our community. In reading all these I am struck by how much I have learned and grown closer in my understanding of how meaningful and impactful our staff’s perspectives are, and how insufficient it is that we celebrate Black History (or as some of them have told me: U.S. History!) in only one month of the year.
I come away from this experience—in highlighting our staff’s reflections—with a suggestion that we celebrate our collective history every day and focus on all that makes us unique, our shared common values and experiences, and what drives us all to want to be a part of the S:US Team. I believe that by raising our voices and experiences and highlighting who we are and what we believe in, we can learn and grow from each other. I want us all to be seen and heard, and representation in all its manifestations is critically important, today more than ever.
I’ll leave the reader with this quote from Malcolm X: “We need more light about each other. Light creates understanding, understanding creates love, love creates patience, and patience creates unity.”
