A Day of Service Rooted in Dr. King’s Legacy

MLK Day volunteer group at Marcus Garvey.
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, staff and volunteers came together last week for a meaningful Day of Service at our affordable and supportive housing site in Brooklyn on January 19th. We welcomed 40 volunteers from AmeriCorps, NYC Service, Healthix, and the community, along with Senator Roxanne Persaud, to help prepare apartments for new tenants by organizing apartment starter kits filled with everyday essentials.
Staff from across the organization volunteered alongside community partners, including President & CEO Perry Perlmutter and Chief Program Officer Monica Santos, reflecting our shared belief that service and leadership go hand in hand. Because of this collective effort, 55 individuals and families transitioning from shelters into supportive housing will move into homes that feel ready, welcoming, and cared for. From pots and pans to linens, shower curtains, and spice racks, each item helped transform an empty apartment into someone’s first stable home in a long time.

This day of action embodied Dr. King’s call to serve our communities with compassion, dignity, and purpose. We are grateful to Senator Persaud for leading with action and standing with us in service, and extend special thanks to our staff whose planning, coordination, and on-site support made this day such a success!
