Building Confidence on Ice: Stephanie’s Volunteer Impact

For Stephanie Johnson, volunteering with Services for the UnderServed (S:US) was a natural way to combine her passion for ice skating with a desire to give back. She was drawn to our Developmental Disabilities Services’ adaptive skating program for the opportunity to connect with others through a sport she loves.
From the start, her experience felt seamless and well-supported through our volunteer coordination team and program organizers. “Once onboarded, the placement went quickly. Every step of the way I felt supported by my volunteer engagement coordinator.”
On the ice, Stephanie built friendships with the people we serve, celebrating each success no matter how small. “Helping Brian [a person served with an intellectual/developmental disability] take his first glide felt like a real triumph; seeing his pride in that moment reinforced just how meaningful this program is.”

She’s also witnessed immense growth in the skaters over time. “From the first week to the last week you can see the participants’ confidence and skills grow. Watching them learn to glide, fall and get up, and walk the ice without fear all while enjoying the process is a success.”
While the program is designed for participants, Stephanie emphasized how deeply it has impacted her as well. “This program has brought immense joy to my life. Being able to participate, witness their progress, and play even a small role in their lives has been a true privilege.”
Through her volunteer experience, she shared, “It’s taught me patience, adaptability, and empathy. Meeting each participant where they are and celebrating every small win. More than anything, I’ve seen how consistent encouragement can build real confidence and create a truly inclusive, supportive environment.”
Her advice for anyone considering volunteering is simple: “It is worth it. Being an S:US volunteer is both meaningful and deeply rewarding.”
