Celebrating Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

During Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we celebrate stories like Ms. Doris’, a woman with an intellectual/developmental disability (I/DD) supported by Services for the UnderServed (S:US), who recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Our commitment to uplifting people with I/DD extends far beyond this month and continues every day.
Doris celebrating her 100th Birthday.
Through our Developmental Disabilities Services and community housing, Doris has had access to daily living assistance, health supports, and meaningful social connections—resources that have helped her thrive and maintain independence. Her centenarian milestone is more than a celebration of life but shows what is possible when people with I/DD are supported with dignity, consistency, and person-centered care. Ms. Doris enjoyed the party and the thoughtful gifts she received from her friends, her staff (present and former), and even the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, taking in the festivities and the warm attention from everyone around her.
Every seventh person worldwide lives with some form of disability. At S:US, we serve approximately 700 New Yorkers with I/DD, as well as neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Independence is a journey that takes opportunity, practice, and meaningful support. With the right services in place, individuals with I/DD can live in, work in, and contribute fully to their communities.
This month reminds us that inclusion matters. We are all part of a broad spectrum of ability, and our collective responsibility is to ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Join us during Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, and throughout the year, in supporting inclusive communities where every person is valued and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
