Honoring the Women Leading Change at S:US

March is Women’s History Month, and the 2026 theme—“Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”—invites us to honor the women whose leadership, courage, and vision continue to shape our communities. March 8, International Women’s Day, further amplifies this global celebration of women’s achievements and the ongoing pursuit of gender equity.
Honoring Women’s Leadership and Legacy
This month is a time to recognize the often-overlooked contributions women of all backgrounds have made throughout our nation’s history—both those who paved the way for gender equity and those who are breaking barriers today. Women’s History Month began as a local effort by California educators to celebrate “Women’s History Week.” In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation recognizing National Women’s History Week, and in 1987, Congress designated March as Women’s History Month.
Centering Women at S:US
At S:US, women make up more than 60% of our workforce. Their leadership, expertise, and compassion strengthen our organization and deepen our impact across New York City. We know that gender equity is essential—not only for our staff, but also for the New Yorkers we support, many of whom are women navigating the challenges of poverty, homelessness, disability, and systemic inequity, including a significant number of Black, Indigenous, and women of color.
Why Gender Equity Matters
Gender equality helps communities thrive. When women have equitable access to opportunity, it leads to stronger families, healthier communities, and more resilient local economies. Ensuring that women can reach their full potential benefits everyone.
