Announcement Shared Commitment to Providing Safe, Accessible Homes for Adults with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities in New York City
Brooklyn, NY —State Senator Julia Salazar today presented a check for $75,000 to Services for the UnderServed (S:US) to support critical improvements at a Bushwick group home serving adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities. The state capital funding, secured by Senator Salazar earlier this year, will allow for significant accessibility upgrades at the S:US-operated home located at 999 Bushwick Avenue.
During a tour of the facility, Senator Salazar and S:US leadership witnessed firsthand the planned scope of the renovations, which included the installation of a new ADA-compliant ramp, a widened side entrance, and a newly renovated bathroom. The protective canopy cover for the lift is forthcoming. These improvements have enhanced the quality of life and independence of the home’s residents
“New York State has a duty to foster healthy and spacious neighborhoods. I’m honored to present this check to the Services for the Underserved’s leadership, whose dedication to providing our neighbors at 999 Bushwick the agency to live with more independence will contribute immense value to our communities,” said Senator Salazar.
Perry Perlmutter, President & CEO of Services for the UnderServed, expressed gratitude for the Senator’s support: “This funding demonstrates Senator Salazar’s commitment to supporting our community’s most vulnerable members. These renovations will make a meaningful difference in our residents’ daily lives, supporting our mission to help every individual reach their fullest potential.”
The Bushwick group home is part of S:US’ network of residences designed to promote independence and community integration for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Each home offers support services providing people access to medical, nursing, psychological, nutritional, and employment services. S:US’ take a holistic approach to care, and services are focused on each person’s overall health and safety, as well as on their emotional well-being.
Monica Santos, Chief Program Officer at S:US, noted that the improvements align perfectly with the organization’s mission: “These renovations support our goal of fostering independence and dignity for all residents. The enhanced accessibility features allow our residents to move more freely and safely throughout their home.”
