Navy Veteran Secures Employment and Advances Training Goals

Courtney, a 65-year-old U.S Navy veteran, enrolled in Services for the UnderServed (S:US)’ Veterans Services employment program in October 2024. He served from 1986 to 1990 and received an Other Than Honorable discharge. At the time of enrollment, Courtney reported no immediate housing issues. He has been stably housed in the Bronx for the past four years with assistance from a case manager for aftercare support and a NYC housing subsidy.

Courtney brought a strong and diverse skillset to his job search. He is certified as both a phlebotomist and a licensed New York State security guard, with several years of experience in both fields. In addition, he has five years of hands-on experience in commercial maintenance and repairs.

Upon enrollment, Courtney completed the Job Club workshop with his case manager and was referred to both the job developer and training specialist to explore employment and training opportunities. With S:US’ support, he scheduled and completed his annual renewal training and fingerprinting for his security guard license, successfully renewing it on November 13. Additionally, his resume was updated and tailored to highlight his qualifications. He was also referred to the Financial Liaison for budgeting and financial counseling services.

On December 16, Courtney participated in an in-house recruiting event hosted by S:US in collaboration with Phipps Houses. There, he interviewed for a facilities position with an S:US recruiter. Just ten days later on December 26, the job developer was informed by the Phipps Houses recruiter that Courtney would be offered a permanent, full-time porter position at a rate of $17.50 per hour. The offer letter was scheduled for delivery on December 30.

While the job developer supported Courtney throughout the onboarding process, the training specialist helped him register for an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30 certification course beginning on January 13, 2025. In addition, Courtney received vital support including transportation assistance (MetroCard), winter clothing (coat and boots), interview attire, and food assistance during the holiday season.

Thanks to his dedication and the comprehensive support provided by the program, Courtney has successfully secured employment and is actively continuing his professional development.

This success story was made possible through a generous grant awarded by the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which enables S:US to continue to expand our support services for veterans across New York City and Long Island.
